Amey to provide sustainable solutions for Network Rail
Amey has been selected by Network Rail to deliver its capital delivery frameworks for the north west and central regions of England. The collaboration aims to drive down the CO2 emissions of the rail networks, as well as boosting biodiversity along the routes.
Peter Anderson, managing director at Amey, said, “Our whole life approach to asset management enables Amey to expertly integrate our operational knowledge with our in-house design and analytics capabilities to create solutions which maximise the life and usage of railway assets.”
Amey is no stranger to collaborating with technology firms to boost the efficiency and security of UK rail networks. The firm also collaborated with Finboot earlier in 2023, working to produce what they believe is the first use of blockchain in UK rail. The new platform will be used to plan access times for engineers looking to maintain and renew tracks across the country. And later in the year, it launched a new partnership with technology firm Indra to establish an open digital signalling ecosystem for the UK’s rail networks.
With these capabilities on offer, Amey has landed a place on five lots of Network Rail’s Category B and C frameworks, to provide electrification and plant works across the region for the next five years. The news carries the opportunity for a two-year extension, and will also see Amey work to drive down CO2 emissions, reduce waste and increase recycling, as well as deliver improvements in biodiversity net gain on every project site – with an ultimate aim of reducing carbon by at least 80% by 2035.
Anderson added, “We are delighted to be awarded exclusivity on these five framework lots, which extend our long-term partnership with Network Rail’s North West and Central team. Working collaboratively with the team and our supply chain, we will work together to enhance connectivity across the UK to improve freight logistics to support businesses and trade, and to make passengers’ journeys easier.”
Network Rail’s framework builds on Amey’s experience in other complex, challenging infrastructure, such as on the Core Valley Lines, in Wales. Here Amey’s experienced and innovative team developed a unique, discontinuous electrification solution which closely integrates train and track. At the same time, it enhances Amey’s presence in the north west and central regions, where it was recently appointed to the Engineering and Construction Services, and the Programme and Project Management Services frameworks.
