PSC expands in UK with Ramboll power systems purchase

New Zealand-origin consultancy PSC has added to its expanding European presence with the acquisition of Ramboll Group’s UK-based power system business. The team of consultants from the Danish engineering and design consulting services firm grows PSC’s European headcount total to 34 people.

Utilities are experiencing a sustained period of disruption, as the growing call to decarbonise and the challenge of connecting increasing amounts of renewable distributed energy resources is an on-going priority. Renewable power has grown to account for more than 33% of the world’s total installed power generating capacity, while in the UK specifically – for the first time ever – renewables generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the third-quarter of 2019.

Amid this unprecedented change, Power Systems Consultants (PSC) has grown rapidly into a multinational company. Founded in 1995 in New Zealand, PSC is now headquartered in Washington, US, and the firm also has bases across Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The mid-sized consultancy helps its electric utility clients deploy, manage, and maintain power system solutions to deliver clean, efficient, and affordable power to customers. Its heightened popularity has seen the firm working hard to expand its European outlets in particular in recent months.

At the turn of the year, PSC purchased Gridconnect, an Ireland-based firm which provides technical advice for the renewable power generation industry and brings to PSC expertise in grid connection, substation and HV installation design and construction supervision of generator installations. Now, PSC has followed this with the purchase of a firm in the UK.

At the start of February 2020, PSC secured a deal to acquire the power systems unit of engineering consultancy Ramboll. Senior experts from Ramboll's power systems unit will now help boost PSC UK’s experience in owner engineer services, power system feasibility studies, technical due diligence, regulatory consultancy services and project management – including Ramboll UK’s power systems lead Gary Landels, who will now head PSC’s power networks division.

Landels commented, “We have been impressed by the quality of PSC UK’s work and their commitment to client satisfaction. In that way, they are a great fit with our team. This transaction allows us to continue to serve our clients with the excellent quality they expect while significantly increasing capacity and broadening available expertise.”

The news sees PSC grow its presence in the UK to 34 electricity experts and regional offices in London, Newcastle and Warwick in the UK, as well as in Dublin, Ireland and Ludvika, Sweden. The team delivers expertise in planning, analysis, development and strategic advisory to utilities and energy companies in the EMEA region, while globally PSC now has a headcount of more than 180 staff.

Ramboll has also seen positive results over the last 18 months. In mid-2019, the firm reported its highest ever revenue globally, while in the UK Ramboll achieved 19% organic growth with gross revenue rising to £125 million – its best results to date – despite broader Brexit uncertainty.
