Motoring company finds IT savings with Leading Resolutions rationalisation

Leading Resolutions has helped a leading automotive firm to find major cost savings in its IT systems. The firm supported a comprehensive analysis of the client’s IT estate, before delivering an extensive strategy and road-map to see the required changes through.

Founded in 2001, Leading Resolutions is a technology consultancy which offers independent advice to clients around the world. Combining expertise, experience and commercial savvy for its services, it supports businesses from its two offices in London, and Royal Wootton Bassett.

One such client was a leading motoring company, which contacted the firm after identifying significant increases in business IT spend on applications, infrastructure, and services that were thought to have been purchased outside of central processes. Recent research suggests that a large portion of indirect spending at large firms happens without financial oversight – and the automotive client had already found an estimated £1.1 million in potential annual savings to that end.

Now, as the organisation sought to regain control, reduce risk, and rationalise spend across the business IT technology estate, it hoped to catalogue all elements of business IT components across the organisation. It also wanted to understand the business rationale behind non-IT-led technology spend; while shaping a rationalisation programme to enable the reduction of duplication, risk, and cost. And once it had gathered that information, it needed a roadmap to achieve targeted savings in the 2026 financial year.

Analysis and strategy

Coming aboard the project, Leading Resolutions conducted stakeholder interviews to understand the business IT estate concerning capabilities and technologies, along with gaps and operational dependencies. The experts then reviewed the client’s SaaS tools, third-party apps, and personal device integration, and mapped business IT spend using finance-sourced data to validate cost reduction estimates and identify and quantify areas of opportunity for cost savings.

Building a rationalisation strategy from this input, Leading Resolutions then worked to group systems by function, usage, and business value. Looking at where savings could be found, the professionals prioritised opportunities based on cost, risk, and alignment with strategic goals; and then proposed a service catalogue and capability map to guide future governance.

When the implementation of this plan finally kicked off, Leading Resolutions worked closely with finance, procurement, and architecture teams. The team also facilitated executive-level discussions to align on remediation and investment priorities.

Outcomes

Over the course of the project, Leading Resolutions identified over £400,000 in immediate savings, with a further £700,000 targeted through rationalisation. The team also delivered a fully populated business IT component catalogue and risk assessment to help achieve that.

Among the deliverables to further help, Leading Resolutions developed a high-level roadmap for execution, including sequencing and ownership. According to the firm, looking ahead, this “positioned the client to make informed decisions on future IT investments and governance, including a series of recommendations around governance, process, and organisation to support future management of the estate.”
