Hanna Moukanas leads French division of Oliver Wyman

Oliver Wyman has named the Lebanese Hanna Moukanas as Managing Director of its French operations. Moukanas is tasked with leading the firm’s 250+ partners and consultants in France, and further growing both its market share and track record.

After graduating from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Hanna Moukanas (54) started his career as an engineer in the Middle East. In 1986 he decided to move to Paris, France, in order to follow an MBA at Insead. After obtaining the degree, in 1987, Moukanas together with three other professionals co-founded MID, a Paris-based consulting firm which he co-led up to 1995, when the consultancy was acquired by Oliver Wyman, and he has not left since.

In 2000, Moukanas moved to the US to join the Boston office of Oliver Wyman – a subsidiary of US group Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC) – where he served as global leader of the firm’s strategy consulting practice. Three years later he returned to the French capital and took the reins of the global Business-to-Business Industrial & Services practice, and later on also served as head of Oliver Wyman’s French operations. Most recently he served as global leaders of Oliver Wyman’s Delta consulting business*, which supports clients with the design and implementation of large-scale organisational transformation efforts, and as global head of the firm’s Organization & Transformation practice area.

Hanna Moukanas - Oliver Wyman France

In his role as Managing Director of Oliver Wyman France, which consists of a team of 35 partners and 250 employees, Moukanas is tasked with leading the firm’s strategy and client development, as well as overseeing internal operations, including resourcing, talent management and recruitment. He will report to Davide Taliente, who heads Oliver Wyman’s European operations.

Looking ahead, Moukanas sees significant potential for further growth, with the French advisory market – valued at just over €4 billion – returning to growth and clients increasingly shifting their focus towards (international) growth and innovation. In 2015 Oliver Wyman booked roughly 15% growth, and he believes the firm can leverage the momentum to accelerate growth in the year ahead. Asked for how the growth will be realised, Moukanas points at Oliver Wyman’s rich intellectual property base, and the ability to leverage a global footprint, spanning 3,700+ professionals in 40+ locations. The new Managing Director in addition highlights the end-to-end strength of the Paris team, emphasizing that in terms of market share the French office leads the pack compared to the US or German divisions, and as a result the Paris team can build on what he believes is a unique track record across the full depth and breadth of the industry and functional portfolio.

Earlier this year, Oliver Wyman France was named the fifth most prestigious strategy consulting firm in France, trailing just the Big Three US-giants (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and Roland Berger, which is led by the Frenchman Charles-Edouard Bouée, who took over at the helm of the German consultancy in June last year.

Moukanas has three children and is married. His wife works at Paris-based law firm Flichy Grangé.

* In 2000 Mercer Consulting, the predecessor of Oliver Wyman (in 2007 MMC rebranded its various management consulting operations as Oliver Wyman) acquired Delta Consulting Group, a New York-based corporate organisational design and change management consultancy. Moukanas was highly familiar with Delta – he was for instance part of the team that evaluated the acquisition, actively assisted in its integration and subsequently served on Delta’s Board of Directors.
