Tom Johannessen leads Financial Services Advisory arm of A&M
Alvarez & Marsal has appointed Tom Johannessen as Managing Director and Head of its Financial Services practice in the UK. He arrives from Deloitte, where he was most recently a Managing Partner.
Founded in 2008, Alvarez & Marsal’s (A&M) Financial Industry Advisory Services (FIAS) group is supported by senior members across the firm, including professionals in its practices including Real Estate Advisory, Dispute Analysis & Forensic Services, and Restructuring and Transaction Advisory, among others. The group’s offering includes crisis and interim management, due diligence work, risk management and governance, and regulatory compliance and enforcement, among others.
Tom Johannessen will now work closely with A&M’s European FIAS teams to build the practice across the UK and Europe. The team has expertise in all areas of financial services, including banks, asset management, wealth, FinTech, payments and insurance.
Fernando de la Mora, Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal and Head of Financial Industry Advisory Services for Europe, said of the news, “Johannessen’s experience and expertise will be vital in the coming months, as financial service institutions continue to grapple with some of the most complex conditions since the 2008 financial crisis and focus on transformation and profitability.”
As Managing Director and Head of FIAS in the UK, Johannessen brings more than 25 years of experience in financial services, with extensive expertise in bank transformation and restructuring, risk and regulatory advice and strategic resource planning.
Most recently, he spent two years with Big Four firm Deloitte, where he was a Managing Partner in its own financial industry advisory wing. In addition, he has led numerous M&A transactions at a number of investment firms – including a spell as Managing Director in High Yield for the EMEA wing of Lehman Brothers.
Johannessen said of his new role, “The financial services industry faces a variety of challenges over the next few years. However, there are exciting opportunities with consolidation across the entire industry accelerating, driven by synergies and increased support from regulators, including ‘badwill’ for banks, successful execution of transformational programmes and digitalisation supporting improved customer acquisition and retention. I am delighted to join the A&M team and support companies in managing this challenging landscape.”
