Cornerstone Research has added three senior experts to its team. Maria Maher has joined the firm as a principal in London, while Nathan Miller and Paul Oyer, two senior academics in the US, have affiliated with the economics consultancy in the US.

Maria Maher has more than 20 years of international experience as an economist, specialising in competition and regulatory matters. She consults on complex issues related to abuse of dominance, cartels, mergers, market investigations, contracts and damages – her expertise spans financial services, chemicals, energy, retail, transport, telecommunications and water among others.

Maher joins Cornerstone Research from CEG Europe, where she was a partner and senior adviser. Prior to that, she worked in the Competition Economics service line within KPMG's Economics & Disputes practice in London, at AlixPartners in the firm’s Competition Policy wing and at NERA Economic Consulting, the economics consultancy of Marsh & McLennan Companies, also the parent of Oliver Wyman and Mercer. Maher started her career at the OECD, where she spent ten years working across a variety of economist roles.

During her consultancy career, she has advised clients and their legal advisers in a number of countries throughout Europe as well as in the United States, Canada, UAE, Algeria, Bangladesh and Malaysia. Maher joins Cornerstone Research’s UK office, which is based in London. She is joined by Vivek Mani, a principal and competition expert with the consulting firm since 2005. Mani has relocated to London from Cornerstone Research’s New York office.

The additions come two months after Cornerstone Research added two other principals in London: Luis Agosti and Ruxandra Ciupagea both joined from Compass Lexecon, an FTI Consulting subsidiary.

“I’m absolutely delighted that Maria and Vivek are joining the competition team in our London office, in response to growing international client demand. It’s an exciting stage of our journey as we continue to build our presence in the competition arena in Europe,” said Peter Davis, Senior Vice President and Head of Cornerstone Research’s European Competition Practice.

Meanwhile, in the US, Cornerstone Research saw two senior academics affiliate with the firm. Paul Oyer, the Fred H. Merrill Professor of Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB), focuses on labour and human resources issues, the economics of organisations and incentives. “Paul is an authority on personnel economics, particularly in the high-tech space,” said Cornerstone Research President and CEO Michael E. Burton.

Nathan Miller is an associate professor of strategy and economics at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business. A former staff economist for the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice (DOJ), Miller is regarded as an authority on antitrust, industrial organisation, and regulation. Burton: “Nate brings a valuable combination of expertise to the firm’s antitrust and competition practice.”

Globally, Cornerstone Research has 700 staff and offices in Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington DC.
