RSM has appointed Sophie St John as a private client partner in its Client Legal Services practice. St John will begin life at the firm immediately, and will be joined by former Deloitte employee Laura Luty, who has been confirmed as a new Director in RSM’s Manchester office.

Sophie St John, who has been a private client solicitor for 20 years, has joined RSM’s legal arm from Barclays Wealth and Investment Management where she was lead counsel specialising in trust work. Prior to joining the consulting firm, St John had previously been in the employ of a number of highly regarded private client divisions, including those of Speechly Bircham, Allen & Overy and Bircham Dyson Bell.

The appointment adds another service offering to RSM’s newly launched Client Legal Services practice, which offers employment, corporate, partnership and legal regulatory legal services at present. In her new role, St John will work closely with RSM’s private client practice, which offers tax and wealth advice to individuals, trustees and estates.

Carolyn Brown, RSM’s Head of Client Legal Services said of the appointment, “We are incredibly fortunate to have secured Sophie’s talent. She is ideally suited to direct our private client legal services in a way that complements and enhances RSM’s existing private wealth expertise.”

Head of the firm’s Private Client Services, Gary Heynes, added, “RSM’s private client offering is already one of the largest tax advisory and compliance teams in the UK for individuals, trustees and estates. We are very pleased to extend our private client services through the recruitment of a private client legal partner to support our private client tax and wealth advice to our clients.”

Elsewhere, RSM also confirmed the hiring of former Deloitte staffer Laura Luty. The new recruit has been appointed as a Director in the Manchester office of the accounting and consultancy firm, effective immediately. Luty spent more than 13 years with Big Four firm Deloitte, working her way up to the role of Associate Director, before moving to RSM. She brings more than 17 years of consulting industry experience to the new role.

Earlier in 2017, RSM’s Mancunian outfit saw another change in the form of Stephen Green’s promotion to the head of its Transaction Services Financial Due Diligence practice. The firm also recently announced a further strengthening of its VAT and Indirect Tax practice in Scotland, with the appointment of Ian Brown as a Manager in its Glasgow team.
