Grant Thornton promotes four partners in North-West

Grant Thornton has promoted Marc Balshaw, Paul Atherton, Matt Foulger, and Davyd Fisher to partner. They take up their roles in the firm’s North-West tax team, as the firm looks to strengthen across the region.

Peter Terry, North West practice lead and partner at Grant Thornton UK, said, “The North West has a uniquely diverse and resilient business community, from entrepreneurial owner managed businesses and fast growing scale ups to large corporates and international groups. These promotions reflect both the calibre of talent we have within our firm and our confidence in the future of the region. By strengthening our senior tax team, we are enhancing our ability to support clients at every stage of their growth journey.”

Marc Balshaw has been promoted to partner in the corporation tax team of Grant Thornton. He first joined the professional services firm in 2013, as a tax associate – and was named director in 2023.

Paul Atherton is promoted in the same team. He joined Grant Thornton in 2014, as a corporate tax executive – having previously spent three years with ASE – where he was latterly a tax senior.

Matt Foulger has been made a partner in Grant Thornton’s innovation tax wing. Having joined the firm in 2013, he was made a director in 2023. Prior to Grant Thornton, Foulger worked in PR.

Davyd Fisher is appointed to the employer solutions team, having joined Grant Thornton in 2012. He was initially a director for the first 13 years of his stay, having previously spent seven years as a manager in global employer services with Deloitte before that.

With Manchester and the wider region continuing to attract investment across sectors including technology, manufacturing, professional services and life sciences, the expanded senior tax team is positioned to support businesses navigating growth, transformation and regulatory complexity.  The partner promotions build on further recent investment in the North-West tax practice, constituting 16 senior appointments, including promotions to director for Jon Caren, Sophie Edwards, Matthew Dent and Emily Humphreys, alongside the arrival of Matt Walker as a real estate tax director, further deepening leadership capability across the region.

Hazel Platt, head of tax at Grant Thornton UK, added, “Our tax practice is built around depth of expertise and collaboration across specialist service lines. The recent partner promotions in the North West demonstrate how we are growing our capability and continuing to invest in the specialist knowledge our clients need. Marc, Paul, Matt and Davyd each bring valuable expertise that strengthens our offer in the region and nationally.”
