Speaking on his retirement, Hales said, “I have had an amazing 38 years with EY, having worked in our Reading, Birmingham, Alabama and Southampton offices. The best part of my role has been working with a diverse and global team – I am always amazed by the breadth of skills and experience that our people bring to their job. I am delighted that Ryan is taking over as Office Managing Partner – he is a true advocate for the region.”

Looking ahead, he will head up EY’s Southampton office, which is home to more than 180 professionals, including nine partners. The firm is investing in growth across the office, and recently welcomed 20 new graduates, interns, and apprentices in September 2023, with more set to join this year as part of the firm’s student recruitment programme.

On helping the firm to reach its ambitions in Southampton, Squires commented, "I’m delighted to have been passed the baton by Dave who has had a hugely positive impact on the office during his tenure. He has been instrumental in advancing the office’s diversity and inclusion agenda and has made a concerted effort to connect with all our staff; from being visibly present and approachable in the office to organising a variety of charitable events for different causes. Under his leadership, the Southampton office has grown from strength to strength."

He added that he was especially committed to continuing the legacy left by Hales. Squires emphasised to that end that he would look to carry on Hales’ work by “ensuring the Southampton office is the best place to work for our people, while continuing to deliver exceptional results for our clients.”
