First Actuarial has installed a new senior investment consultant, as it looks to boost its offering to clients in the south of England. Adam Michaels brings two decades of private sector experience to the role, as well as significant regulatory knowhow.

Michaels commented, “What I like most about First Actuarial is their relentless focus on what the client wants. This is reflected in their long-term approach to service development, and they’ve invested significantly in developing the technology and processes needed for efficient service delivery, which will ultimately benefit the client. That’s really important in a competitive market where clients need cost-effective solutions.”

Founded in 2004, First Actuarial is a consulting firm which specialises in pension advisory services. The firm is headquartered in Leeds, but also has UK offices in Manchester, Peterborough, Tonbridge and Basingstoke.

Michaels arrives with the firm as a senior investment consultant to its investment team based in Basingstoke. In his new role, he will collaborate with senior investment consultant Manoj Patel, who joined the advisory firm last year, as part of the company’s efforts to grow the Basingstoke team and expand its investment presence in the south of England.

“Our southern clients definitely appreciate having consultants who are based nearby,” Patel commented. “Although hybrid working is becoming the norm, trustees still find comfort in having actuarial and investment consultants who are based in the same office.”

Most recently, Michaels was a partner with Momentum, an investment solutions and consulting firm based in Windsor. Prior to this, he was a principal at Buck and also worked as a partner and consultant for Lane Clark & Peacock.

Michaels commenced his career in the public sector, though. In 1997, he joined the UK Government Actuary’s Department (GAD), spending seven years with the organisation in total. GAD provides actuarial solutions including financial risk analysis, modelling and advice to support the UK public sector.

Patel added, “We’ve got bright and hardworking people in the investment team here in Basingstoke. First Actuarial offers the warm and close-knit team spirit of a smaller company, but consultants like Adam and myself bring a lot of experience from the bigger firms.”
