After a number of key contract wins in the Midlands, Rendel has moved to a new office in Birmingham. The global engineering design specialist aims to create more than 40 jobs in the region by 2028.

In recent years, the West Midlands has developed a status as being the UK’s fastest growing tech sector outside of London. This has also led to an influx of specialist talent in the region – something which has seen a growing number of consulting firms look to tap into the region’s innovative market.

Previously, this proverbial goldrush had seen heavyweight advisory brands EY and Accenture, and global construction consultancy Meinhardt among the new arrivals in the area. Now, they have been joined by Rendel – which has launched a new permanent office, to help meet with growing demand.

Rendel Managing Director Vardy Jones commented, “Our move into our new Birmingham offices is one filled with optimism. With new project wins and a growing team, a larger permanent office space was the logical next step for us as an organisation. Birmingham has a huge pool of local talent which made it an obvious choice as a location to establish our presence.”

The launch of the new space follows several significant contract wins in the region, including for the infamous HS2 project, and Coventry Very Light Rail. Prior to 2009, the company had an office in Birmingham which helped deliver the M6 widening project – however, the new location at 1 Edmund Gardens provides a better-connected position for the firm to help support clients in the area.

Jones added, “A key reason we decided to expand in the West Midlands is the region’s impressive connectivity and central location, enabling us to easily serve clients across the UK and overseas. Since expanding back to Birmingham in 2019, we have grown from one local representative to 18 team members and we’re looking forward to continuing our growth journey here.”

Looking ahead, the multidisciplinary, international design and engineering firm hopes the move will support long-term growth plans, including the aim of creating 40 jobs in the West Midlands over the next five years. This was welcome news for Councillor Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, who attended Rendel’s office launch in February 2023, to meet members of the team and celebrate the consultancy’s growth in the city and future expansion plans.

Ward noted, “As a hub of mobility and engineering, with the West Midlands being the largest region in the UK for manufacturing, it is only fitting that Rendel is growing its presence here. Birmingham’s deep pool of specialist talent, with over 30,000 students a year graduating in engineering and tech, can provide Rendel with an abundance of skilled people to fuel their growth plans. We look forward to seeing the company thrive in the region for years to come.”

An Ingerop Group company, Rendel has made Birmingham its fourth office location, with existing offices also in London, Bristol and Sydney. The consultancy has been involved in a multitude of critical infrastructure projects both nationally and internationally, including the Thames Barrier in London, the Melbourne Metro tunnels in Australia and Hinkley Point in Somerset.
