Atos has announced the official opening of a new global Life Sciences Centre of Excellence. In agreement with the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire, UK, the facility will help life sciences and pharmaceutical researchers develop treatments and technologies for diseases around the world.

The pandemic has inevitably seen demand for life sciences and pharmaceutical work spike over the last three years. According to a study from Market Reports World, the life science market size is estimated to now be worth $130.3 million in 2022, and is forecast to a readjusted size of $193.3 million by 2028 with a CAGR of 6.8% during that period.

However, the industry is not without its own challenges. Life sciences companies have faced mounting pressure from many directions, including increasing regulatory requirements, nonstop technological advances, and intense pricing pressure. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies are seeking to gain improved control over their cost base, and build in more flexibility into their supply chains.

As operators in the sector adjust to these pressures, many are turning to the consulting sector for external expertise. This boom in demand for UK life sciences consulting has seen a number of firms launch new life sciences wings or acquire capacity for that market via bolt-on-acquisitions, while several more have arrived in Britain from the US.

Atos has become the latest firm to boost its life sciences offering in the UK, with the launch of a new hub for the sector. The Atos Life Sciences Centre of Excellence will provide scientists on campus, and global genome and bio-data institutes worldwide, early access to emerging technologies to support their research, helping to accelerate the process of bringing new drugs to market and delivering tangible societal benefits.

Dr Natalia Jimenez, Global Life Sciences Product Lead at Atos, said, “The opening of the Life Sciences Centre of Excellence is a significant milestone in Atos’ pioneering work to drive innovation in the healthcare and life sciences industry. By providing an ecosystem where genome and biological data research scientists can access emerging technologies accompanied by leading Atos experts, the Centre of Excellence will play a crucial role in fostering life sciences discovery and innovation, expediting the time it takes to bring new drugs to market and delivering tangible benefits to patients.”

The facility is launched in agreement with the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire, and is also billed by Atos as being an “exploration, discovery and co-creation instrument”. It will collaborate with global genome and bio-data institutes worldwide, allowing early access to emerging technologies to support their research which be complemented by Atos’ existing campus compute facilities. This will give it access to leading-edge technologies, such as Quantum, High-Performance Computing, Edge Computing and AI, supported by Atos’ products.

The aim is to create solutions that enable healthcare organisations to design efficient strategies to prevent and manage disease, while also supporting pharmaceutical and MedTech organisations in in accelerating the development of targeted treatments. The outcomes from collaboration between Atos and health and life sciences stakeholders will be showcased at the Centre of Excellence through innovation workshops, proof-of-concept production, demos and webinars.

Dr Julia Wilson, Associate Director, Wellcome Sanger Institute, added, “We are delighted that Atos has joined our Campus community, and look forward to partnering with them to maximise the vast range of opportunities the Centre of Excellence will provide for scientists here and worldwide. Emerging technologies such as Quantum, High-Performance Computing, Edge Computing and AI hold transformative potential for advancing biodata research, helping the life sciences sector to shorten the drug development process and reduce costs.”
