Professional services firm UHY Hacker Young has bolstered its London office with a new research and development tax partner. Kevin Edwards brings a decade of tax consulting experience to the role.

The research and development (R&D) landscape across a number of industries, including automotive and energy sectors, stalled during the pandemic. To many firms, simply surviving the last two years of chaos left many such firms feeling like they were still inherently “doing enough,” when it came to innovation. If companies are to make the most of the economic recovery and push ahead for growth, however, they will need to find new ways to pivot their businesses – necessitating new R&D projects.

In this context, R&D tax opportunities are particularly important as companies look to fund projects in the months ahead. As such, consultants who can help their clients tap R&D tax credit schemes are experiencing a spike in demand. Joining from UHY Hacker Young, Kevin Edwards will help the firm meet this demand by advising on large and complex R&D tax credit claims across construction, pharmaceuticals, engineering, advanced manufacturing, and software.

Edwards said of the news, “I’m thrilled to be joining the London R&D tax team. UHY Hacker Young has a brilliant reputation for helping support innovative businesses successfully secure R&D tax credit applications. I look forward to working with the team to help maximise tax savings for the firm’s clients.”

He joins from East Midlands firm Duncan & Toplis, where he was Head of R&D tax credits & Corporate Tax Director for the past year. Prior to that, he was also a Tax Partner with RSM, and also at MHA MacIntyre Hudson. A noted expert in the industry, he is a member of HMRC’s R&D Consultative Committee and has presented to the Chartered Institute of Tax on R&D tax credits.

Subarna Banerjee, Managing Partner of UHY Hacker Young London, added, “We’re very pleased to welcome Kevin to our tax team. With a track record of securing the most complex and challenging R&D claims through deep technical knowledge, Kevin was an obvious choice to join our team.”
