UK-based SME environmental and planning advisory firm Atmos Consulting has appointed Malcolm Sangster as Technical Director of its environmental impact assessment and consenting team. The former Ramboll and AECOM professional brings more than two decades of experience to the role.

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an integral part of planning and development, where the anticipated effects on the environment of a proposed development are measured. The process can inform the decision making process, but it can also be seen as complex and confusing, particularly for key stakeholders. However, if managed well it offers an opportunity to de-risk development and enhance reputation.

Founded in 2007, Atmos Consulting is an environmental and planning consultancy which serves clients by providing cost-effective, robust solutions for projects in the built environment. Operating from a network of local UK based offices, Atmos hosts an expert team including planners, EIA consultants, noise and acoustic consultants, ecologists, ornithologists, hydrologists, geologists, GIS specialists and expert witnesses.

As it bids to further strengthen its offering in 2020, Atmos has appointed Malcolm Sangster as a Technical Director for its EIA and consenting team. Sangster will be based in Edinburgh and will be responsible for growing Atmos’s EIA team across the UK, leveraging 22 years of experience in environmental management across sectors including energy, manufacturing and industry.

Sangster said, "I am very excited to join this vibrant and growing consultancy, albeit at a challenging time. I look forward to working with clients old and new, both in developing new projects and assisting existing operations."

Sangster most recently spent three years of his career with AECOM, where he was an Associate Director in the transactions and compliance team. Prior to that, he spent two years with Ramboll Environ, where he joined the firm’s Edinburgh office as part of the management team, line managing four consultants. Sangster has worked on EIA and consenting for thermal and renewable energy projects, environmental permitting for a range of industries and due diligence assessments for company and property sales and acquisitions.

Atmos Managing Director Jean Curran added, "Malcolm joins us at what are unprecedented times for the development and construction industry, but as we move forward sustainable development will never be as important and his appointment will be pivotal to supporting clients in enabling consentable development."
