Liz Bingham has been appointed CEO of insolvency and restructuring association R3. Bingham was previously the organisation’s President, and earlier in her career she was a Managing Partner at EY.

The insolvency, restructuring and turnaround profession is a vital part of the UK economy. The profession rescues businesses and jobs, creates the confidence to trade and lend by returning money fairly to creditors after insolvencies, investigates and disrupts fraud, and helps indebted individuals get back on their feet. In recent years, as consumer-centric industries falter in particular, this function has been increasingly important – and as the global economy reportedly edges toward recession, it could prove even more crucial in the coming period.

R3 is the trade association for the UK’s insolvency, restructuring, advisory, and turnaround professionals. The organisation represents insolvency practitioners, lawyers, turnaround and restructuring experts, students, and others in the profession. R3’s work includes technical support for members; education, training and networking opportunities; and public affairs, press and policy work, among other services.

R3 appoints former EY Partner Liz Bingham CEO

As R3 looks to strengthen, ahead of a crunch period for the UK and global market, it has installed Liz Bingham (R3’s former President in 2013-14) as its new Chief Executive Officer. In this position, she will oversee R3’s work to protect and promote the strong restructuring and insolvency framework which is required to enable the association’s members to fulfil their vital role in the economy and in society. She will also manage the execution of R3’s Strategic Plan, which was launched in 2019 and is the association’s roadmap for the next three years.

R3 President Duncan Swift remarked, “Liz’s experience and understanding of R3 and her extensive experience of insolvency and restructuring will be assets to her and to us as she takes charge of R3 at a crucial time. The insolvency and restructuring profession plays a really important role in the economy. From returning money to creditors to helping turn around distressed businesses, and of course helping people access debt relief, the profession’s work is absolutely vital in supporting lending, trading and investment, and the overall smooth functioning of the business environment.”

A former Managing Partner at EY, Bingham joined the firm in 1986 having previously worked at BDO Stoy Hayward. More recently, Bingham – who is Stonewall Role Model and a leading campaigner for diversity in the workplace – was self-employed as a consultant advising organisations on inclusion. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 New Year Honours list for services to equality in the workplace.

Bingham said, “My year as R3 President was one of the proudest moments of my career in insolvency and restructuring. My long history with the association leaves me well placed to help continue the great work Emma and the team have started to ensure R3 remains at the heart of the UK’s insolvency and restructuring community.”
