Advisory and audit firm Grant Thornton has appointed Tim Birkett and Gavin Hutchinson as Director and Associate Director in the firm’s Northern offering. Birkett will be based in the firm’s Manchester office, while Hutchinson will take up his new role in Leeds.

In recent years challenging market conditions and an ageing population have seen some schemes run increasingly large deficits, so consulting firms which offer advice to fund managers are currently enjoying heightened demand. As a result, business and financial advisor Grant Thornton UK has made a significant investment in its national pensions practice with the appointment of two new practitioners across its Northern offices.

Paul Brice, Head of Pensions Advisory, Grant Thornton UK, remarked, “We are committed to developing the strength and breadth of our specialist Pensions Advisory team. These appointments reflect the firm’s commitment to developing a market-leading Pensions Advisory practice, underpinned by regional centres of excellence.”

Tim Birkett has joined the firm as a Director in Manchester and will be leading Grant Thornton’s Pensions Advisory offering in the North. He arrives at the firm having spent the last nine years with Mercer, where he was a Covenant Consultant. Prior to that, Birkett spent 12 years with Vertex Data Science, where he held the roles of Head of M&A and Treasurer, among others. Gavin Hutchinson meanwhile arrives at the firm from PwC. He was with the Big Four firm for some 20 years, 11 of which were in the firm’s Pensions Credit Advisory team. Hutchinson joins Grant Thornton’s Leeds office as an Associate Director, bringing over a decade of experience in employer covenant advisory to the role, alongside expertise in a range of sectors, including social housing, charities and Local Government Pension Schemes.

Neil Knights, Head of UK Pensions at Grant Thornton UK, commented, “We are truly excited to be welcoming Tim and Gavin.
