Two Scotland-based energy consultancies have announced a deal to merge their operations. Edinburgh-headquartered ITPEnergised and Glaswegian firm Xero Energy will combine their respective consultancy businesses, culminating in the union of around 50 staff around the world.

2017 saw strong demand across multiple sectors in the environmental consulting market of the UK fuel another year of solid expansion among British-based firms. However, beyond market leaders, the most recent figures also uncovered a severe slowdown in the growth of the sector, exacerbated by Brexit worries. As many firms in the sector look to shield themselves from this economic turbulence, while pushing for further growth, some have turned to merging in order to consolidate resources and spread risk.

ITPEnergised was originally established as ITPE in 1981 as part of IT Power, a world leading renewable energy consultancy firm offering technical, engineering and advisory services to public and private sector clients in all aspects of sustainable energy. Taking on its current form in 2014, the ITPEnergised team boasts experience providing renewable energy and climate change consulting, which it states it has applied for over 2500 small to large scale projects, in more than 150 countries.

Now, as the firm looks to better support its existing clients and grow its footprint, ITPEnergised has announced a merger with fellow renewable energy specialist Xero Energy. While Xero is based Glasgow, Scotland, the firm has project experience from all over the world including continental Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Asia. Most recently the firm provided services to the 4GW Honsea Offshore Wind Farm through 2010 to 2014. The grid focused renewables consultancy, confirmed that it would merge all UK and international business with ITPEnergised, combining a total of 50 staff in the new unified business, based across London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol and overseas.

An important part of the merger seems to be that the firms often compete for and complete similar contracts. Like Xero, ITPEnergised is heavily involved in renewable projects on an international basis. In April 2018, Atlantis Resources and ITPEnergised revealed the formation of a consortium put together to deliver a 450kW tidal stream turbine to China Three Gorges (CTG). Together with engineering consultancy Ramboll and BMT Asia Pacific (BMT), the company has also delivered a series of guidelines for development of offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

Nigel Scott, Managing Director of Xero Energy, said of the alliance, ‘’ITPEnergised brings a reputation for high quality environmental consultancy and technical advisory services across a range of sectors, both in the UK and internationally, where the business has grown rapidly over the last 4 years. All of us are excited to be joining forces, offering a wider range of expertise and expanding both in the UK and overseas.’’

Jonny Clark, Managing Director of ITPEnergised, added, “We’re delighted to join forces with Xero. We have worked with Nigel and his team for many years and we know there is a great cultural fit between the two teams. This merger strengthens our growing UK business and international offering, providing much greater opportunities for our combined staff. Xero brings a very strong track record in onshore and offshore renewables and expert grid and electrical engineering skills.’’
