PwC trims audit headcount amid slow growth
PwC is reportedly set to become the latest member of the Big Four to downsize its UK headcount. The firm has confirmed “a small number of targeted voluntary exits” in its UK audit division, amid another year of slow growth.
The world’s largest consultancy firms are currently under pressure to innovate, amid increased competition from technology companies and boutique firms. At the same time, many find themselves considering downsizing their headcounts, as a means to shoring up bottom lines, having ‘over-hired’ during a post-pandemic boom in demand which did not last.
KPMG, EY, and Deloitte have all announced similar plans to cut down on staff in response. And PwC itself has repeatedly done the same.
Earlier in 2026, as it sought to reduce overheads, PwC announced it was bringing its consulting and risk practices under one umbrella. The merger came as the firm looks to streamline its operations, and followed an announcement in the second half of 2025 which declared it would trim its graduate intake by 200 places for the year.
Now, reports from City AM suggest that PwC may be planning further redundancies in the sector most considered its bread-and-butter: audit. Speaking on the latest in a series of redundancies across the Big Four, the business news site said it “understands that those affected are senior associates and managers in the audit practice.”
Audit and accounting are the traditional sources of the Big Four’s might – but the team has reportedly seen “low staff attrition” over the years. In combination with the aggressive post-pandemic hiring when audit and consulting services were booming, the market’s plateau has since led PwC to explore reducing its workforce.
When approached for comment, a PwC spokesperson confirmed to City AM, “There have been a small number of targeted voluntary exits in areas where natural turnover has been low to ensure we have the right skills in place to respond to market opportunities. We are providing those affected with the support you would expect throughout the process.”
