Alvarez & Marsal opens for business in Bermuda
Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal has announced the formal launch of its new Bermuda practice, having secured its licence to open and operate in the territory. The move sees the firm become the latest in a succession of consulting firms to launch restructuring services in the lucrative offshore space.
Alex Lawson, a managing director at Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), commented, “Bermuda is a pivotal hub for global insurance and capital, and establishing a local presence enables A&M to bring our hands-on execution model to the market. We are very excited to have Joe lead our team in Bermuda – his stellar reputation, track record and hands-on approach will further strengthen A&M’s offshore offering, and deliver the very best advice and services to our international and local clients.”
Key offerings in A&M’s Bermuda include restructuring and insolvency; insurance and risk advisory; and disputes, forensics, valuations and transaction advisory.
Backed by A&M’s global platform – a network of more than 12,000 people spanning 90 offices in over 40 countries worldwide – the Bermuda practice has seamless access to specialised offshore expertise across the Caribbean and Atlantic, and works closely with the firm’s teams in its London and New York headquarters. These connections will see Lawson – recognised for his expertise in offshore restructuring and cross-border mandates, including formal appointments in major international matters – provide strategic oversight to the Bermuda practice; while new additions will also grow the practice locally.
Lawson added, “With new hires joining on the ground and full access to A&M’s offshore, London and New York teams, we’re positioned to help clients tackle complex restructuring, valuation, regulatory and performance challenges, and to deliver measurable results across the insurance and broader financial services ecosystem.”
Office in Hamilton
Responding to client demand to grow its offering in the territory’s capital of Hamilton, A&M commences life there with five senior hires expected to join the local team in the coming months. In the meantime, Managing Director Joseph Gordon, an insolvency practitioner with more than 20 years’ experience of restructuring, advisory, forensic investigations and corporate finance experience, will head up the Bermuda office.
Gordon explained, “I’m excited to support Bermuda-based clients and to bring A&M’s deep bench of expertise to the island. Our team is committed to partnering with the market on its most complex matters – whether in insurance and risk advisory, cross-border restructuring, or contentious situation – to help strengthen outcomes for clients and the jurisdiction.”
The ‘offshore’ market of Caribbean-based tax havens has been attracting a glut of consulting talent in recent years – with large companies and financial operators having flocked to the overseas territories to make the most of their beneficial status. In particular, restructuring firms have been arriving in the market in some numbers, to support clients as they further overhaul their operations there. Alongside the likes of Teneo, Interpath, Quantuma, and Opus Business Advisory Group, A&M has now strengthened its offshore presence accordingly.
