The Cumberland Building Society has expanded its commercial banking offering to support businesses in the professional services industry. The expansion will see the financial institution serve accountants, solicitors, surveyors, estate and letting agents, and financial advisors.

Based in Carlisle, and established in 1850, The Cumberland Building Society is the UK’s 10th largest building society, serving 160,000 customers through its digital channels, call-centre and network of 31 branches. To mark its 175th year in business, The Cumberland has been rolling out expanded services to adapt for new clients. This has included healthcare, the food and drink sector and now the professional services industry.

The Cumberland now offers financial services to businesses within these sectors, including, accountants, solicitors, and surveyor businesses. The building society will provide services including mortgages, current accounts, and business savings accounts as part of this, offering a “people-first approach via its experienced and knowledgeable team”, according to a release from the group.

Scott McKerracher, head of commercial at The Cumberland, said, “At The Cumberland we believe in responsible banking that puts people first. It is a natural progression for us to expand into different sectors, enabling us to extend our Kinder Banking approach to a wider range of businesses, offering them not just the financial services they need, but also a human touch which will help guide them moving forward. We’re incredibly excited to extend our offering to the professional services sector and we look forward to working with organisations within them.”

As part of that “Kinder Banking philosophy”, The Cumberland offers a rare relationship-managed service, prioritising a personalised customer experience delivered by real people. Businesses operating in The Cumberland’s new sectors, who are looking for financial support, will be supported by The Cumberland’s 28-strong commercial team.
