ERM to acquire environmental division of NewFields Companies

ERM has agreed to acquire the environmental division of NewFields Companies. The acquisition will expand ERM’s existing technical and strategic offerings, adding more than 100 experts in the process.
Sustainability consultants are enjoying record demand, as environmental and social challenges cause businesses to pivot their business models. Previous research of the global environmental, sustainability and governance consulting market suggests it will enjoy a double-digit compound annual growth rate until 2027 – offering major opportunities for firms in the sector.
Styled as the world’s largest pure-play sustainability consultancy, ERM has been positioning itself to take advantage of that growth with a raft of recent acquisitions. With deals including the purchase of Energetics and Workiva in 2024, the firm has taken its global headcount to 8,000 experts, spread across 40 countries and territories.
As ERM looks to further build on that legacy, it has announced a new deal to bring in around 110 experts in strategic consultancy, site investigation, and remediation practices. The firm will add these experts by way of the purchase of NewFields Companies’ environmental decision – bringing a wealth of experience in areas such as environmental forensics and emerging contaminants, human health impact and risk assessment to ERM’s growing team. The deal also expands the UK headquartered firm’s reach into the US – the world’s largest national consulting market.
Susan Angyal, ERM’s Regional CEO for North America, commented, “Transforming environmental liabilities and legacy assets is fundamental to the sustainability goals of many organisations. Bringing together the expertise of ERM and NewFields Environmental Division will help clients to tackle an increasingly complex set of environmental challenges while harnessing the growing importance of environmental data for decision-making and value creation.”
Founded in 1995, NewFields is an environmental, engineering, and construction management consulting firm. The organisation services clients across 19 locations and 250 expert specialisms. The remaining businesses of NewFields will continue to operate independently from ERM.
Speaking on the deal for the environmental division, Patrick Gobb, NewFields CEO, added, “Joining forces with ERM presents an exciting opportunity for our team and clients. We share a commitment to environmental consulting and are eager to leverage our combined strengths to create lasting value for our clients.”
