BDO has announced the appointment of its new head of public sector. Robert Noye-Allen takes on the role at a time when the UK public sector is re-evaluating its relationship with the consulting industry.

Commenting on his appointment, Noye-Allen said, “I’m very excited to be taking over the role of head of public sector… As a firm, we are well placed to support the growth ambitions of the organisations we serve, whilst maintaining a keen focus on the current and future risks businesses may face.”

The risk advisory services partner, who has almost 30 years’ experience in the sector, takes over the role from Greg Rubins who retired in July after 12 years with the firm. Looking ahead, Noye-Allen hopes to build on “Greg’s energy and enthusiasm”, while working to continue to expand BDO’s portfolio across the public sector, as it looks to meet a wide-ranging set of objectives.

However, the move comes at a time when the government is looking to scale back spending on private sector expertise. Recent figures show that there has been a 57% increase in government spending on consulting services since 2019 – and the newly elected Labour administration has pledged to reduce that spend by more than £3 billion over the coming five years.

Despite this, Noye-Allen believes there is still room to grow BDO’s role in forging a new path for the UK’s public sector. In his new position, he will be responsible for co-ordinating the growth of BDO’s public sector offering across audit, tax and a wide range of advisory services to central government organisations, local authorities and the NHS, nationally and regionally – and suggested that BDO is well-positioned to help with some key changes in all those areas.

He contended, “The new UK government brings an interesting political landscape, with an ambitious agenda focussed on growth. Businesses, policy makers and delivery bodies will now need to reflect, change and adapt to respond to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
