A&M Tax adds three managing directors to London office
Alvarez & Marsal has announced the appointment of Anthony Whatling, Steve Henshaw, and Tom Lobb as managing directors. The hires come at a time of significant growth for the firm and its tax practice, as it seeks to further expand its offerings and presence in major sections across the UK.
Ernesto Perez, the global practice leader of Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) Tax, said, “These three senior hires are significant as they reinforce our commitment to fortify and expand our Tax services in the local market. Anthony, Steve, and Tom bring essential expertise that position A&M as a leader in delivering unparalleled client value and insights both domestically and globally.”
Formerly known as Taxand, A&M Tax is an independent tax group affiliated with global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal. Consisting of experienced tax professionals, dedicated to providing customised tax advice to clients and investors across a broad range of industries, the firm offers clients a choice in advisors who are free from audit-based conflicts of interest, from the US, as well as in the UK from its base in London.
Anthony Whatling joins its London wing as a managing director in private client dealings – and will work to expand the firm’s offering for high net worth private clients, their families and trusts. Whatling bring over 20 years of experience in providing tax advice to ultra-high and high net worth clients, offshore trusts and family offices. Prior to joining A&M, he spent four years with the wealth advisory business, Evelyn Partners, as well as holding positions at EY, PwC and BDO.
Commenting on his decision to join A&M, Whatling said, “A&M has a very strong, high-quality brand, and the firm has some fantastic clients, so I’m very excited to be here. There is now an opportunity to further develop A&M’s private client offer. Tax is becoming an increasingly pressing concern for private clients as they navigate more and more complex financial affairs. As global experts with in-depth local knowledge, we are best-placed to support them with this.”
Steve Henshaw meanwhile joins in the same role, in A&M Tax’s indirect tax wing. He brings a wealth of experience advising privately owned, private equity backed companies, and large multinationals on indirect tax matters. Prior to joining A&M, Henshaw spent 25 years with EY, where he also advised a number of large multinationals and was responsible for the indirect tax input on due diligence and structuring projects.
Henshaw noted, “Joining A&M during a period of supercharged growth presents an exciting opportunity to get involved in a variety of innovative work. In particular, the increased use of technology by businesses and tax authorities, provides huge scope to support our clients on these types of projects.”
Tom Lobb arrives as a managing director in A&M Tax’s international corporate practice. With more than 20 years of experience in international tax and transactions for listed groups, private equity funds and their portfolio companies, Lobb started his career at KPMG and spent the last seven years at EY in London, most recently as a partner.
Lobb added, “A&M’s ambition to challenge the status quo and its freedom from audit conflicts were major draws for me,” said Tom Lobb, explaining his decision to join the growing firm.
The news follows another dual-arrival in December 2023. Andy Murray and Prasam Patel both joined A&M Tax as managing directors.
