Capacitas helps JAGGAER save millions in cloud-migration project

Cloud consultancy Capacitas has helped global technology firm JAGGAER migrate its data centres into the cloud. The resulting improvements to performance and reliability have helped save JAGGAER more than $2 million on its annual cloud budget.

JAGGAER is a B2B commerce company, using the Internet of Things (IoT) to connect buyers, suppliers, and partners – with customers including AstraZeneca and many other blue chip organisations. Over $500 billion worth of goods flows through its Enterprise Commerce Network every year, with its solutions autonomously executing many of the repetitive, behind-the-scenes tasks required to facilitate enterprise commerce.

Made up of several acquisitions by private equity company Cinven, JAGGAER has been accumulating a growing client base – but also reams of data from each of its respective acquisitions, leading to an increasingly complex data centre set-up. As the firm sought to improve its service, and scale operations to accommodate even greater levels of traffic, it became clear that it would need to move its data centres into the cloud.

The cloud refers to servers that are accessed over the internet, and the software and databases that run on those servers. The cloud's scalability allows businesses to adjust deployed resources to match demand. Unlike a physical data centre, cloud platforms operate with on-demand pricing: users pay for the resources they consume after they are used.

By moving all the different data centres into the cloud, JAGGAER knew it would allow it to simplify its technology landscape and improve the performance and reliability of its services. However, as JAGGAER sought to make the most of the technology, it was aware it would need support to transition, without impacting current users.

This saw JAGGAER tap the specialists at Capacitas; a hyperscale cloud consultancy headquartered in the UK. With 20 years of experience from working with scaled, complex systems that have tough challenges in high-profile and well-known organisations, Capacitas has the knowhow to find best practices for any organisation adapt to the cloud.

Efficiency audit

When it was brought on board, Capacitas audited JAGGAER’s existing and complex estate – both on-prem and in the cloud – to get a solid understanding of why the architecture had been set up the way it had. From this initial four-week audit, Capacitas could see that JAGGAER could create major savings during the initial six months of the project, and showed it how do to this on a week-by-week and product-by-product basis. This led to two cost optimisation engagements each lasting three months.

So far, the optimisation planned out by Capacitas has helped JAGGAER to stay $2.7 million under its predicted annual cloud budget – a major plus, considering Flexera research recently showed that 32% of business leaders in the UK are concerned their cloud budget is going to waste. Looking ahead, the organisations are now working together on a four-month transformation engagement, aiming to solidify a company-wide cultural shift, and make cost efficiency behaviours part of everyone’s mindset to continue realising such savings.

Manzoor Mohammed, CINO and Co-Founder of Capacitas, commented, “The shift in mindset and culture across the JAGGAER teams, in terms of how to manage the cloud, has been outstanding and this has undoubtedly made all the processes easier to complete. We’ve managed to save JAGGAER a significant amount of money over what it was forecasting to spend, while creating the foundation for performance and scalability. It just proves when the Cloud is done right, it can become rocket fuel for any organisation.”
