Alfredo Bello, Alex Barclay and John Lawson join Alvarez & Marsal
Global consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal has bolstered its team in London with three new senior leaders: Alfredo Bello, Alex Barclay, John Lawson.
Appointed a Managing Director and Co-Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Bank Restructuring offering in Europe, Alfredo Bello brings more than three decades of experience in over two dozen countries to the firm.
During his career, Bello has led dozens of high-profile bank restructuring and crisis management projects, including supporting the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and banking authorities worldwide on navigating banking crises situations. His engagements span bottom-up financial, operational, and strategic restructuring of individual banks as well as top-down support to policymakers and regulators with broader financial sector challenges.
Some of Bello’s recent engagements include assisting the Ukrainian banking authorities to plan and execute the nationalisation of PrivatBank, serving on the IMF team that reviewed the Spanish banking system during the peak of their crisis, assisting in the creation of Slovenia’s national ‘bad bank’, and supporting the Bulgarian authorities in handling the collapse of KTB, the country’s fourth largest bank.
Prior to joining Alvarez & Marsal, Bello worked twelve years at AlixPartners (and Zolfo Cooper), latterly as Head of Distressed Financial Services. Earlier in his career, he worked for Arthur Andersen and Bain & Company.
Mike Corner-Jones, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s European Company-side Restructuring team, said: “Alfredo’s joining bolsters our distressed banking team. His perspective of distressed banking and systemic crises, including in geopolitically-sensitive countries, combined with his network of IMF and World Bank professionals, will help our clients craft and drive solutions to their most complex challenges.”
Appointed a Senior Director, Alex Barclay bringing over 20 years of advisory and operational expertise to Alvarez & Marsal. Specialised in service, product and experience design, product development and digital innovation, Barclay is part of the Healthcare and Life Sciences practice.
Barclay previously was Strategic Design Principal at Boston Consulting Group, and Head of the Rapid Breakthrough unit at Big Radical (a product design business based in London). Earlier he worked at Accenture Interactive, Havas and OgilvyOne.
Raymond Berglund, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Healthcare & Life Sciences practice across EMEA, said, “Clients often struggle to connect technology with hands-on process change. The design process is where these two elements come together in healthcare and life sciences. When this is executed well, companies in the space can unlock the revenue and profitability required to scale up and reach even more lives.”
“Alex’s talent is a great complement to our existing service offerings, and we are excited to see the value he and his team will generate for clients.”
Commenting on his new challenge, Barclay said, “I’m joining Alvarez & Marsal because there is significant opportunity to demonstrate the power of human-centred design and to work with an experienced team of operators that have the ability to implement and execute.”
Appointed a Managing Director, John Lawson strengthens Alvarez & Marsal’s technology offering in London. He will focus on helping the firm’s corporate clients across sectors leveraging technology, IT and digital solutions to generate business value and enable business functions.
Lawson brings over 25 years of experience to the firm. He joins from BAE Systems where he served as Global Chief Information Officer. Prior to that he held the role of Global Chief Information Officer at GKN’s Automotive division. Previously, Lawson worked as a consultant with PwC, Deloitte and Infosys.
“Technology is at the forefront of business transformation, even more so since the pandemic. The firm’s bias towards action along with its operational approach to performance improvement dovetails with my own experience and provides a strong foundation to generate true value for clients,” said Lawson about his new role.
Malcolm McKenzie, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s European Corporate Transformation Services team, said: “Digital and technologies are strategically important competencies in corporate transformation to help clients achieve their goals. John’s expertise enhances our offering, expands our ability to maximize value for our clients and aligns with our operational heritage.”
