Alvarez & Marsal boosts restructuring capabilities Kai Hoffman arrival
Alvarez & Marsal has appointed Kai Hoffman as a Managing Director in its London office. Mike Corner-Jones, Head of Company-side Restructuring for EMEA at the firm, noted that Hoffman’s arrival “will enhance the firm’s ability to meet increasing demand for” restructuring work.
The number of corporate insolvencies is rising rapidly. In September 2021, the UK Government released its insolvency statistics, showing the number of registered company insolvencies was 56% higher than September the previous year. In 2022, this may get even worse – as global corporate insolvency numbers are expected to increase by 33%, returning to levels not seen since before the pandemic began. In 2009, during the global financial crisis, the figure was 60% less.
With such dire forecasts on the horizon, Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is expecting heightened demand for its restructuring services in the UK and across Europe. With that in mind, Kai Hoffman’s appointment supports the growth of A&M’s Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO) services and capabilities.
Corner-Jones added, “Kai offers a wealth of expertise in restructuring and corporate finance. His abilities strengthen the firm’s CRO and company-side restructuring offering to clients, and his investment banking background will help target complex and multilateral workouts, acting on clients’ behalf to implement successful resolutions.”
Hoffman brings more than 19 years of experience in restructuring and corporate finance transactions across a wide variety of sectors, including travel, retail, commodities, automotive, oil services, structured real estate, gaming and telecommunications. Throughout his career, he has advised both corporate debtors and leading stakeholder groups in various geographies.
Prior to joining A&M, Hoffman worked at Morgan Stanley and Lazard. At both firms he focused on larger scale restructuring and financing transactions. His recent work has included financing and recapitalisation transactions in the retail and automotive sectors and lead financial advisor to zinc producer Nyrstar on its rescue financing and novel financial restructuring. He also spent three years as a Consultant with EY earlier in his career.
Hoffman remarked, “I am excited to be part of such a rapidly growing firm that holds a preeminent position in the restructuring market. I look forward to working with Mike Corner-Jones and the rest of the team to further expand the practice and build on A&M’s already stellar client offering.”
With over 5,400 people across four continents, A&M delivers works with corporates, boards, creditors, private equity firms, law firms and government agencies facing complex challenges. Its teams leverage the firm’s restructuring heritage to help companies act decisively, and accelerate results. The addition of Hoffman advances the firm’s strategic plan to augment its company-side restructuring offering regionally and across Europe. It also complements the recent appointment of Markus Schmid in Germany.
