KPMG has appointed Mark Cliffe as a Senior Advisor for its ESG offering. The former Chief Economist at ING Group will support the climate risk and decarbonisation strategy team.

Nine-in-ten companies are currently failing to comprehensively measure their total greenhouse gas emissions. Even while a growing number of companies tout “science-based” net-zero targets for the coming decades, as many as half of companies estimate an error rate of close to 40%.

With new regulatory and reporting requirements soon coming into force, businesses know they will need to strengthen their environmental, social and governance efforts in the approaching period. To ensure they are best placed to respond, companies are increasingly turning to the consulting industry for support with ESG.

Mark Cliffe, Senior Advisor, KPMG

KPMG operates from 21 offices across the UK with approximately 16,000 partners and staff.  KPMG’s climate risk team is spread across 20 of those UK offices, supporting clients across financial services, the energy sector and industry. To help it prepare for heightened demand in the coming year, KPMG has added Mark Cliffe to its ESG wing.

Bridget Beals, Co-Head of climate risk and decarbonisation strategy at KPMG UK, said, “Mark’s experience and understanding of how climate change will affect our clients adds further strength and expertise to our team. The floodlights are firmly on climate change following COP26 and businesses are rightly looking at taking steps to mitigate and adapt to the climate risks and opportunities they face.”

Cliffe spent the last four decades of his career as a Chief Economist with various companies in the financial sector. Having spent spells with ANZ Merchant Bank, Nomura and HSBC, he joined ING in 1998, and worked as Global Head of Financial Markets Research, and Group Chief Economist until 2020. He spent the last year heading up the bank’s global New Horizons Hub, delivering thought leadership on disruptive structural change and sustainability.

As a Senior Advisor at KPMG UK, Mark will support its climate risk and decarbonisation strategy team, which helps businesses to understand the physical and transition risks they face under different climate change scenarios and advises on decarbonisation.  He will also work on thought leadership, leveraging KPMG’s insight to address business opportunities and risks surrounding ESG.

Commenting on his new challenge, Cliffe said, “I’m delighted to be part of KPMG UK’s rapidly expanding ESG activities. A key example of its far-sightedness is its work on climate risk and decarbonisation, supporting clients with specialist insight tools like Climate IQ. It’s essential for all businesses have a strategy in place to address climate change, not only to mitigate the resulting risks, but to take advantage of the opportunities that decarbonisation could create.”
