Health and safety consultancy sees growth buoyed by pandemic
An East Midlands health and safety consultancy has achieved rapid growth thanks to heightened demand for health and safety services amid the coronavirus pandemic. Daventry-based Safety Management Limited is celebrating an increase in turnover and a record client list.
Founded by a small group of like-minded health and safety experts from industry and government in 1989, Safety Management Limited (SML) has grown to become a leading health and safety consultancy in the UK. SML works with companies across the UK, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Europe to ensure safety standards comply with current legislation in all health and safety related matters to safeguard employees, customers and company reputation – boasting clients such as Associated British Foods, Red Bull Racing, Marriages and Stella McCartney and many others.
At a time when many consulting firms are seeing the pandemic and recession hit their revenue stream hard, the firm has adapted quickly to the pressures of 2020, and is thriving as a result. SML’s mainstay of business is in the manufacturing sector – however, due to the current pandemic, Covid-19-secure reviews have been a priority for most customers.
Based in Daventry, SML’s consultants operate right across the UK making certain our clients are compliant with all current regulations. With the UK Health and Safety Executive carrying out spot checks to ensure businesses are helping to stem the spread of coronavirus, SML has been actively helping to ensure compliance. According to Mike Fletcher, who is a former Health and Safety Executive Inspector, SML has managed to adapt so quickly due to a six-year project which positioned it perfectly to help during the crisis.
Fletcher, who bought SML in 2014, said, “Over the past six years we have worked to restructure the business, introducing a more systems-based operation and employing talented consultants with expertise in their own specific fields. Our client list has grown hugely, retail being a new sector for us this year and most recently Biosciences.”
With a turnover approaching £1 million at the time, the rebrand has seen the business grown around 20% per year, with an aim to manage and control steady, organic growth. The challenges of 2020 have seen that record continue, and SML consultants have proactively ensured clients are kept fully aware of any impending health and safety legislation which may impact their business, so that they can dedicate enough time and resource to manage the introduction of new regulations.
