This role sits within the PAG team at Alvarez and Marsal in London. We work with clients across the FS space and focus on banks, private equity and credit investors and other specialised FS firms. The team brings together the market recognized global leaders within the loan portfolio, real estate portfolio and structured credit product space.

Across its various product lines, PAG; provides a full service market advisory to financial institutions and sellers of non-core assets; supports investors with all aspects of due diligence on target assets; develops and implements strategic deleveraging options; structures, arranges and executes structured credit transactions for banks and corporates for risk transfer and funding; and provides pricing and analytical services and advisory services in connection with remediation, consolidation, valuation and servicing of non-core assets. A&M's successful involvement results in successful optimization of one or more important regulatory and shareholder performance metrics and thereafter increased value and balance sheet focus for the client.

A&M’s PAG professionals have extensive experience in their fields and come from a range of backgrounds, including regulators, consulting and investment banking. The team works on often very high-profile cases, including as arranger or on either the buy side or sell side, and has in-depth relationships with the largest and most relevant counterparties in the respective spaces.

Purpose of the role:

An opportunity exists for a PAG experienced professional (either Senior Associate or Director level) based in our London office. The role focuses on Bank Analytics and will support the whole PAG group in analysis, origination and execution of a range of transactions, primarily in financial services. The role will report to the head of Structured Credit Execution and Advisory (SCEA), which is part of PAG.   

The successful hire will have an in-depth knowledge of bank and financial institution accounting and will be experienced in identifying focus areas of strength or weakness in financial statements. The hire will be familiar with relevant financial services regulation as it pertains to key assets, liabilities and regulatory ratios, and the actions and transaction types that can be undertaken to address and improve them, including knowledge of risk weights and required capital ratios.

The successful appointee will work closely with SCEA and PAG to execute credit transactions which may arise from bank analysis undertaken. Familiarity with rating agency methodology and cashflow modelling is highly beneficial. A working knowledge of securitisation technology and broader credit products is helpful but not strictly required. The hire will bring experience in identifying and solving problems at both a quantitative and qualitative level.

The preferred candidate will be willing to undertake detailed analysis of complex situations. They will be proactive and not be afraid to voice ideas and identify possible areas of interest. They will also be motivated by the prospect of continuing to learn and develop in new areas, including unusual credit situations, innovative structuring and developing regulation.

Key responsibilities:

Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Acting as the key member of the Bank Analytics function, reporting to the head of SCEA;
  • Supporting the development of the wider PAG business plan through identifying attractive possible business opportunities;
  • Supporting SCEA in successfully executing complex credit transactions, including securitisations, hedging and financing, that arise through the primary role;
  • Supporting PAG in generating repeat business through an awareness and analysis of asset life cycles;
  • Interpreting regulation and how this could impact bank strategy, revenues, capital, balance sheet, funding or otherwise, and how specific transactions could be used to address these potential issues;
  • Coordinating with the broader A&M team and contributing to building the brand of A&M and PAG;

Requirements for this position:

The preferred candidate for this appointment will be a focused and highly detail-oriented individual with strong problem-solving ability and an entrepreneurial drive. He/she will be comfortable working independently as well as part of a high-performing team.

Specifically, the successful candidate will have:

  • Successful track record within a well-established financial services firm – a “Big 4” consultancy, a leading specialist and/or niche advisory firm, a credit rating agency or investment bank;
  • Expertise in the financial services sector, particularly in respect of bank analysis, regulation and resulting requirements, accounting and balance sheet treatment;
  • Demonstrable expertise in financial modelling, ideally including accounting analysis, cashflow modelling and rating agency methodology;
  • Good working knowledge of credit products, including but not limited to loans, bonds, securitisations and ABS and credit derivatives;
  • Broad asset and sector knowledge across multiple geographies, including diverse assets such as SME and corporate loans, consumer loans, mortgages, leasing and others;
  • Proven ability to identify problem areas and suggest tangible, workable solutions;
  • Willingness to work on “open-ended” situations and proactively suggest follow-up topics;
  • Proactive drive to apply features and rationale from known situations to new client transaction possibilities;
  • At least a Bachelors or equivalent degree from an accredited university
