This role sits within the FS practice in Europe based in Alvarez & Marsal’s London office.  A&M FS comprises three core areas of expertise; Diligence / Performance Improvement, Bank Restructuring/Credit Advisory and Regulatory Advisory. We are primarily focusing on financial institutions, private equity investors (in financial institutions) and regulatory / resolution based in Europe. 

A&M’s FS professionals advise clients on these specific challenges and have worked on some of the world’s most high-profile cases and deals in a rapidly transforming financial institution landscape. Our European FS team is comprised of seasoned senior operating executives from industry (ex. CEOs, industry executives, senior regulators), coupled with highly skilled consultants.

Purpose of the role:

Within our established and highly regarded FS Performance Improvement team, an opportunity exists for a Commercial specialist at the Director level, based in our London office. We are looking to hire someone who has a successful track record of pre and post-acquisition commercial work, with a blend of both strategic and pragmatic operational skills, an entrepreneurial approach and ability to develop a team.

Supported by the Private Equity Performance Improvement team, you will help build the profile and reputation of A&M in European Financial Services, specifically in the key specialism of Commercial Due Diligence (CDD), strategy & post-deal commercial improvement. You will reflect the operational distinctiveness that is A&M; a business savvy, solution focused business change agent who is determined to make a difference and not afraid to challenge the status-quo. The Director will deliver both interim and advisory assignments in Pre and Post Deal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commercial due diligence (including market dynamics, competitor analysis, product positioning/pricing, distribution strategy, salesforce organisation/management, customer lifetime value, unit profitability etc).

  • Strategic planning, communication and the role includes target operating model development, business expansion, and transformation programme set up

  • Implementing commercial performance improvement projects across all aspects of strategy, go to market, brand, product, distribution, pricing, cost to serve etc.;

  • Leading pre and post-acquisition work to ensure that project deliverables are met on time and to the high standard;

  • Engaging in & developing a detailed, sophisticated and robust A&M approach to CDD and Commercial performance improvement;

  • Support delivery of projects with private equity owned businesses to assess opportunities to improve their commercial performance and implement go-to-market strategy;

  • Support delivery of projects for privately owned and listed banks and/or insurers to assess opportunities to improve their commercial performance and implement go-to-market strategy;

  • Contribute strongly to business development activity including developing successful pitches and selling, on from the initial “diagnostic” project phase into implementation work;

  • Initial rapid diagnostic into a company's immediate and future major commercial issues; product profitability, pricing, Routes-to-Market tactics, customer profitability, customer service and options for performance delivery;

  • Supporting PE firms to ensure their portfolio companies have credible plans and the ability to execute and deliver the financial results required.

Requirements for this position:

Essential:

  • Must have extensive experience in CDD and/or strategy advisory in a top tier strategy firm, leading specialist and/or niche advisory firm or ‘Big 4’ consultancy;

  • Recent, meaningful experience of working within a commercial/sales/customer facing or strategy team at a client (e.g. on secondment) or as a separate role/period of employment;

  • Both Financial Services & Private Equity Industry Savvy with established experience of working with both Private Equity sponsors and PE-backed backed portfolio companies;

  • Experience in commercial operations, including pricing, channel management, salesforce effectiveness and value proposition definition;

  • Experience in delivering on the ground pragmatic Go-to-Market strategy, including for example as a PMO or by running a commercially focused department; Be a team player always.

  • Some exposure to digital/ecommerce;

  • Must have an ability and willingness to travel (potentially from Day 1) to client sites, across the UK & European regions, at short notice as part of the working week;

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is essential;

  • Clear determination to deliver the latest thinking in pre and post deal solutions;

  • Fluency to a business level in English is essential;

  • Be able to problem solve on the go, adapt and frame business issues, have strong analytical skills;

  • A persuasive and effective communicator who can engage effectively with leadership teams in pressure situations;

Desirable:

  • MBA or financial qualification preferred but not required;

  • Additional European languages are also highly desirable;

  • Have a varied cross sector background including telecommunications, automotive, manufacturing, energy, retail, consumer goods, transport, business services and healthcare.
