This role sits within the Financial Services performance improvement practice in Europe based in Alvarez & Marsal’s London office.  A&M Financial Services performance improvement advises a broad range of private equity sponsors and corporates across performance improvement, turnaround and restructuring assignments, including taking on interim management roles.

Whether serving in a performance improvement advisory capacity for an under-performing company, in an interim management role at a strategic corporate, or working with a private equity sponsor across both pre and post deal situations we draw on a deep operational heritage and proven approaches, such as our proprietary diagnostic – the Rapid Results Program, which helps to quickly and effectively assess business risk and identify key areas impeding performance.

A&M’s professionals advise clients on these specific challenges and have worked on some of the world’s most high-profile and complex cases in a rapidly transforming financial services landscape. Our European Financial Services team is comprised of seasoned senior operating executives from industry (ex. CEOs, industry executives, senior regulators), coupled with highly skilled consultants.

The purpose of the role:

A&M Financial Services practice is looking to hire a number of accomplished Senior Director level executives to work in a growing team advising both private equity and corporate clients across a broad range of performance improvement, turnaround and restructuring mandates.

This is a great opportunity for an individual to use their deep financial services industry experience to become involved and be an integral part of a ‘hands on’ high performance team.  As a valued and senior member of the team, you will work on a variety of pan-European assignments, leveraging your industry knowledge and experience supporting clients across a broad range of mission critical situations.

It is expected that you will not only contribute and lead work streams on large assignments, but also lead smaller projects, and in all cases leverage your financial services know how and skill set in analysing the status quo and developing sound solutions either from an external point of view or in collaborative settings with your client organisation.  

It is expected that you will work closely with Partners/Managing Directors and other staff members, taking on mentoring and coaching roles for more junior staff members aligned with the practices broader staff development strategy.

You will benefit from constant exposure to some of the toughest and critical challenges facing the financial services industry and our clients, and need to be comfortable with driving change and delivering outstanding results.

In joining a growing team and business, you will also have the opportunity to be involved in substantial business development activities, including the development of innovative offerings such as drafting and publication of thought leadership papers.

Responsibilities

You will support and in many cases lead the day to day delivery of performance improvement, turnaround and restructuring related projects across “asset light” industry sub-sectors including but not limited to wealth and asset management, insurance and employee benefits.

Assignments may range from advising and executing on identified performance improvement initiatives (revenue growth, cost optimisation, carve out execution, merger integration), undertaking due diligence projects, performing interim management roles or working across other complex strategic issues facing clients. Work will also include advising a broad range of private equity funds throughout the deal lifecycle (pre and post deal) across both buy and sell situations.

To do this effectively, you will need to:

  • Have a professional demeanor with requisite gravitas including having had a strong exposure to client facing activities and be able to deal with top executives in complex and high pressured situations;
  • Manage consultant teams and interactions with clients;
  • Be an action-oriented self-starter with strong analytical skills and entrepreneurial flair;
  • Demonstrate leadership to drive and deliver results
  • Be comfortable working independently as well as within a high performing team;
  • Interpret client requirements and present it in a clear and meaningful way, including how this could impact strategy, revenue streams or wider business issues;
  • In joining a growing business, you will have the opportunity be involved in business development activities and will be part of project pipeline, resourcing, marketing and business development initiatives

Requirements

Essential

  • Relevant industry experience (at least 15 years) in wealth  management from either a Top Tier strategy consultancy, private equity, or directly from industry in a senior executive role;
  • Strong experience of delivering critical initiatives and programs with a performance improvement, turnaround or restructuring lens within the UK & European financial services industry;
  • A high-grade degree qualification from a top tier university;
  • Additional qualification levels (such as MSc or MBA);
  • Mix of hard and soft skills, drive and leadership, ability to generate impact, assertiveness;
  • Strong project management capabilities, stakeholder management skills at senior levels;
  • Strong ability to conceptualize, summarize, and provide key messages to clients and/or senior levels;
  • Strong managerial skills, with ability to distribute workload among team members;
  • Native/fluent English language skills are essential along with excellent writing skills;
  • Excellent financial modelling (Excel) and presentation (Powerpoint) skills;
  • Willingness to travel regularly (mainly within Europe);
  • EU citizenship or right to work in the EU.

Desirable:

  • Additional European languages (French, German or Spanish) are highly desirable.
