A&M brings a wide range of operational, financial and performance improvement services to listed and multi-national businesses, leading global private equity houses and their portfolio companies.  A&M’s Turnaround and Restructuring practice offers critical assistance to companies that are underperforming or experiencing a full- blown liquidity crisis, whilst our Performance Improvement team works with Corporate and PE owned businesses looking to improve operational efficiency, optimize commercial effectiveness and top line performance.  Supporting M&A transaction activity, both pre and post-deal, is an important part of this.

 Our Business Technology team works with clients across Europe to:

  • Lead and remediate complex and distressed technology enabled enterprise transformation programmes
  • Provide hands-on support in tackling the IT issues associated with M&A activity, for example technology and e-commerce due diligence pre-transaction, and PMI, IT Carve Out, 100-day planning etc. post-transaction.
  • Lead digital transformation programmes that improve the business of today as well as enable the business of tomorrow
  • Provide change leadership & management support for leadership teams, and businesses more broadly, to successfully adopt and embed new technologies and ways of working
  • Lead IT strategy, operating model and sourcing initiatives to improve the value for money of the IT function in supporting the service requirements and aspirations of the business
  • Provide interim management of the IT function, for example as CIO, CTO, IT Director, Program Manager, Head of e-commerce etc.

the opportunity

An opportunity exists within our European practice for a Business Technology leader at the Managing Director level based in the UK, providing leadership across A&M’s Corporate, Private Equity and broader business. The successful candidate will bring market leading strategic insight into the power and role of IT in business, possesses deep functional knowledge and insight, a blend of operational and commercial skills, an entrepreneurial approach and a highly developed network across the CFO, CIO and CTO community, and with business leaders more broadly as a trusted advisor on how businesses can most effectively improve the returns on their investments in technology.  Familiar with the technology related challenges and opportunities companies face today, the successful new member of our Business Technology leadership team will be experienced in implementing IT strategy, operating model transformation and sourcing initiatives, in delivering technology-led business transformation programmes and in providing change leadership & management support.

The Managing Director, Business Technology UK, will operate as part of our European senior management team, providing clients with solutions to complex business issues such as: IT Transformation, Digital transformation of operating models, carve-outs, pre-acquisition IT and technology due diligence, post-merger integrations and 100-day planning, IT cost optimization and controls, technology-enabled transformation programme remediation & delivery. 

The successful appointee will have responsibility for continuing to build the profile and reputation of the Firm as strategic IT advisory and programme delivery partners to leading businesses. Furthermore, the successful candidate will develop and execute a specific strategy focused on target clients and distinctive go-to-market propositions.

Specifically, the Managing Director will be responsible for;

  • Contributing to and executing the vision and direction for the continuing build out of the Business Technology team, serving the wider European practice, including: defining, building and leading the practice in the UK; attracting, hiring and developing experienced professionals to enable and drive growth, initially in the UK, then in other key geographies; as well as quickly assimilating and leveraging existing capability at A&M.
  • Building a robust yet flexible plan to generate deal flow of approximately €3-5 million per annum and developing a sustainable business, externally and internally.The successful appointee will be an expert in selling and delivering both interim and advisory assignments.
  • Coordinating across A&M more broadly in Europe and globally in areas such as service portfolio development and key account management, drawing together the industry, functional and technology expertise needed to serve our clients.


The successful candidate will be a high-energy and successful Business Technology leader with extensive knowledge and experience in strategy, operational management and business transformation. The appointee will likely combine line IT leadership (typically a CIO role) and advisory experience, bringing proven ability in leading a successful practice group within a major advisory firm or having built and led a Business/IT consulting business. Advisory experience will likely be from a top tier strategy firm, a leading specialist advisory firm or ‘Big 4’ consultancy.

Candidates will have a tight grasp on technology trends across a number of different sectors and will:

  • Understand the strategic potential of IT in enabling new business models, improving commercial effectiveness, underpinning operational efficiency, delivering market insight and transforming B:B and B:C relationships, as well as how to realize this potential
  • Be skilled in working at CEO, CFO, CIO and Board level to transform strategic Business Technology thinking for a business; steer development of the associated IT operating and governance model; and guide business IT investment prioritization and decision making
  • Be experienced in pre-acquisition IT and Technology due diligence of the Corporate IT function, as well as the core technologies and digital assets
  • Have a strong track record of leading engagements dealing with carve-outs, post-merger integrations and 100-day planning specifically, Day-1 preparation, implementation planning and execution; and planning or implementing relevant Transitional Service Agreements
  • Bring proven skills in IT cost reduction initiatives - including containing and reducing the Operational and Capital IT expenditure of businesses
  • Have demonstrable experience in out-sourcing and managing third party vendors from a commercial and technology perspective
  • Have experience of managing multiple stakeholders including ‘C’ level executives, third-party vendors and Senior Product Owners for high profile and technologically innovative on-line business solutions
  • Have tackled the complexities businesses face in their digital transformation strategies, including in the associated governance, policies, controls and change leadership requirements
  • Have led the selection and implementation of business software tools in a large scale corporate environment, for example: ERP product suites such as SAP and Oracle; cloud-based SaaS solutions such as Salesforce and WorkDay; and AI & analytics tool-sets such as those of Google, Microsoft and IBM
  • Have led and remediated large scale programmes with a strong focus on effective change management (including the IT aspects of acquisitions, mergers and carve-outs)
  • Bring experience of managing teams across multiple locations in Europe (and ideally globally), including third-party and in-house teams.

Specifically, the Managing Director will have:

  • A significant and well-developed network across the UK and wider European business leader, CFO, CIO and Technology communities across Corporate businesses and the Private Equity community
  • A track record of influencing C-level executives, being recognized as a trusted advisor
  • Strong connections in the broad SAP eco-System including SAP itself, CIOs who are part of this community, key System Integrators and complementary solution providers, while also being familiar with other strategic business solution providers such as Oracle and Microsoft
  • Proven evidence of delivering state of the art solutions to ever-evolving and often unpredictable business issues
  • A clear record of delivering the latest thinking in IT related solutions within a highly competitive advisory marketplace
  • A demonstrable track record in converting business contacts and leads into sustainable, profitable revenue streams
  • Recent, relevant leadership experience in IT performance improvement situations
  • Proven people and leadership ability coupled with a track record of initiating, building and developing a new practice group area or stand-alone business unit
  • Robust analytical rigour
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging and uncertain environment
  • A strong academic record, ideally including an MBA
  • Fluency in English is essential; other European languages are highly useful.
