Role description

The Strategy Consulting Practice at Deloitte is seeking to hire experienced professionals to join our growing financial services industry (FSI) team:

Sector focus: Retail Banking, Insurance or Capital Markets

We are looking for individuals with experience and background in strategy consulting and/or similarly rigorous roles in the strategy group of a leading corporate or institution. This experience might be current or reflect a prior role in a quality strategy consulting firm, either in the UK or elsewhere.

Our practice is recognized by our clients for its insight, expertise and the quality of our work. Our culture is collaborative and supportive of your personal and professional development. Our track record of commercial success and our growth ambitions can provide you with a fantastic platform for your career.

The nature of our work

The nature of our work varies greatly, but chances are your engagement will involve some of the following over time: corporate strategy; customer, product and channel strategy; market entry/growth; new business development; portfolio analysis and investment decisions; financial modelling to quantify a strategy or investment; implications of business strategy for a client's business model, their operations or the supporting technology; cost and activity analysis; due diligence and deal advisory work.

The names of our clients would come as no surprise to you: they are the leading players in their sector across retail banking, building societies, payments, investment banking, exchanges, and insurance.

Our strategy team of over 150 professionals is part of a consulting practice that employs over 2,200 staff in the UK. Our overall consulting revenues were over £400m in the year ending May 2010. This performance is a reflection of our client list and the nature of the work we do. The strategy practice plays a unique and critical role in this business and our client proposition, and we are continuing to invest in growing the breadth and depth of our strategy team as a key part of Deloitte's long term plans for consulting.

Financial services is our strongest sector in the UK, and represented over £130 million in consulting revenues last financial year, making it one of the largest financial services consulting firms in the UK.

Responsibilities

As part of Deloitte's strategy consulting team, you will work closely with outstanding, experienced business intellects, both inside Deloitte and on the client side. Our financial services clients are led by highly professional, energetic and forward-looking management teams, and represent the leading firms across capital markets, retail banking, payments and insurance.

The analytical thinking and understanding of real-world strategy application that you will develop in your engagements will be central to your own personal development; the industry contacts you will make, and the experience of working with the wider Deloitte network across all of our competences and lines of business - within Consulting and across the firm - will prove invaluable to your future career, at Deloitte or anywhere else. Finally, new joiners value the warmth and collaborative nature of our working culture.

While most of our work is focussed on addressing specific strategic issues for senior management, we always seek to serve our clients holistically. Often this means bringing in expertise to investigate adjacent issues that are not always apparent at first sight. Indeed, sometimes our client asks us to carry out work that spans a range of business issues holistically - in breadth, depth and across time from issue identification through implementation.

Our strategy team has a unique place in these wider projects of keeping all eyes on the final objectives and the reasons for taking a certain course of action; such projects are often the true test of the analysis and intellectual work leading up to a critical business decision. This makes the Strategy practice a key element of the success of our firm.

Bringing together like-minded professionals - from areas as diverse as strategy, operations, technology, risk, corporate finance, tax, regulation or human capital - in order to deliver an unmatchable client service capability is what we refer to as "One Deloitte".

To have a broader perspective of potential issues encountered when managing diverse teams and the strategies to overcome them; have a clear understanding of the firm’s commitment to creating a more inclusive culture

What Deloitte could mean for you:

As an experienced hire, you would join Deloitte in a position that reflects the balance of your sector knowledge, professional track record and current or previous consulting skills. More senior hires will also be expected to have experience in managing teams to address strategy and business issues in an analytical and focussed manner, often working to challenging deadlines.

We would look to you, as a high quality professional joining our team, to share your own experience and capabilities with us, whatever your educational background or length of work experience. In return, you will learn from us and expand your knowledge base and skill set as you tackle a wide range of strategic and business challenges. While the Deloitte brand stands for much more, our team competes successfully against all of the leading strategy consulting firms on a client by client, and project by project basis.

We offer a structured career path and invest in continuous development and learning, which matter greatly to us. Our growth over the last decade has been very strong and we have ambitious plans for the future: you will find that there is no lack of opportunity for you to develop your career, wherever you choose to take it.

Requirements

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for people who enjoy addressing business problems in an analytical manner, who have the patience to structure decision making, and who strive to develop pragmatic recommendations, tempered by experience.

At Deloitte, your future colleagues and clients will set the bar high. Therefore, we require more than just a good CV showing strong performance and good academic credentials. Our aspiration is to help clients to gain or maintain competitive advantage against an ever changing market context.

How you can help us to achieve this depends as much on your attitude and outlook as on your experience, intellect and people skills. Our FSI strategy team is made up of people with varied backgrounds - strategy consultants, bankers, traders, economists, regulators, mathematicians, classicists, actuaries, linguists, senior executives, lawyers and a former senatorial adviser.

There are however some core consulting characteristics that we are looking for, including:

  • Structure: you will be someone who observes, evaluates and uses logic to arrive at conclusions; you create structure when there is ambiguity, but you remain open to change when new evidence comes to light; above all, you remain curious and seek factual evidence
  • Analysis and Insight: you can abstract and interpret information from both quantitative and qualitative data ? using consulting tools and analytical techniques as needed - to draw evidenced conclusions
  • Communications: you can communicate and explain complex ideas concisely, on paper and in words, and you adapt your style to the situation in hand; you are able to deliver a point of view convincingly and with impact
  • Client relationship management: you build trust and client networks appropriate for you level of experience
  • Engagement management: you like to contribute to the development of work plans and manage your part of engagements and help your colleagues to succeed
  • Commercial: you can demonstrate an understanding of your industry and its context that makes you highly credible for your level of experience
  • People: you have an enthusiastic, positive professional attitude and like to be part of the wider team
  • Firm development: you understand the importance of talent development, training and knowledge management
  • Continuous Learning: you are proactive in developing your own skills, seeking feedback, building knowledge, and sharing your insight with colleagues

We are seeking high quality professionals with experience appropriate for two different roles; the following outline the minimum selection criteria for each role:

Manager/Senior Manager (Engagement Manager):

  • Experience in a consulting role
  • Experience leading consulting teams or similar corporate experience
  • Experience in one of the target sectors: retail banking, insurance, capital markets
  • Minimum 2.1 or equivalent degree from reputable university
  • Full travel mobility
  • Right to live and work in the UK

We are Consulting

Three core competency areas make up our Consulting service line:

  • Technology
  • Strategy & Operations
  • Human Capital

We exist to solve complex problems

Our consultants are renowned for their straightforward approach to solving some of the world’s largest and most complex business challenges. With a team of over 3,000, each of us is energised by the challenge a seemingly inscrutable problem presents. Our distinctiveness lies in our refusal to accept a problem at face value - we draw on the depth of our shared insight to ask the right questions, and it’s these questions that uncover answers - answers with impact.

We are committed to collaboration

Our role is to unlock potential for growth and innovation. We believe this requires real collaboration ? with our own networks and with our clients. It’s why we commit to truly getting under the skin of our client’s needs, developing a full appreciation for their environment, goals and ambitions. We’re also unafraid to challenge. In so doing, we build long-term and trusted affinities.

We create long-term, sustainable impact

We often work hand-in-hand with our clients to help find the right solution and to help apply that solution. Our aim is to leave behind ambassadors who are equipped to continue the transformation we began. For us, it’s about embedding sustainable change, allowing the impact of our insight to be felt for a long time to come.

We offer a number of different career pathways

We offer three different career pathways at Deloitte, meaning that there are three different routes by which people can progress in Consulting. We provide variety regarding the career options available to you, assisting you to take career steps that fit your skills, talents and aspirations, and providing an environment where those choices can be discussed in meaningful and constructive career conversations.

The Consulting Career Paths are:

Consulting pathway ? pathway based around developing a broad consulting skillset alongside building expertise in a specific domain

Consulting Solutions pathway ? pathway where there is greater focus on building skills and deep expertise in a specific domain. Practitioners have a narrow focus, determined by their SME and type of contribution made

Consulting Services pathway ? pathway for people whose career is built around the delivery of managed services to clients (either internal or external)
