Moving at the speed of innovation: practical insights from our 2018 State of the Internal Audit Profession

Our 2018 study on the State of the Internal Audit Profession sought to understand how internal audit functions are building a “technology and talent-enabled” foundation to support their organisations’ innovation strategies. We learned that the most advanced internal audit functions are evolving their technologies and talent models in lockstep - and it’s paying off.

With the accelerating pace of technology-driven innovation, it’s hard to know exactly how Internal Audit’s capabilities will need to change in as little as five years. But one thing is clear - stakeholders will expect Internal Audit to keep pace with the speed of digitalisation and disruption in their organisations as well as take advantage of this era of automation to improve Internal Audit’s productivity, quality and insight.

Our study identified that IA functions fall into one of three distinct categories:

Evolvers (14%) – who are advanced in their adoption of technology
Followers (46%) – who are taking notice but at a slower pace
Observers (37%) – who have basic or zero technology use.

Which one are you? Would you say your internal audit function is innovative? Does your organisation have the talent and tools to deal with the risks arising from emerging technologies? And how will you attract the next generation of talent?

Our summer events will consider:

  • The key findings from this year’s study
  • Insights into how functions have achieved ‘Evolver’ status and the practical actions Observers and Followers can take to move up the technology curve
  • The learnings from real life experiences of Internal Audit leaders who have kindly agreed to come along and share their stories.
