The Boston Consulting Group has picked up Chris Bergstrom as Associate Director in its Healthcare practice. In his new role, Bergstrom will leverage his experience in digital health to provide traditional consulting services as well as help companies incubate and develop new digital health offerings.
Before joining the Boston Consulting Group, Chris Bergstrom worked at WellDoc as the company’s Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer from 2010 to March this year. Prior which, starting in 2005, he worked for BD across a number of levels of responsibility, starting as a World Wide Strategic Marketing Manager, before taking on the role of Senior Manager in its World Wide Strategic Marketing for Diabetes Care in 2006, finally in 2009 he became the company’s Director of Business Development. From 2003 to 2005, Bergstrom worked for Pelikan Technologies as a Marketing Manager. In 1999 Bergstrom started work at Roche Diagnostics, first as an Associate Segment Marketing Manager before becoming an Associate Product Manager. Bergstrom started his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Procter & Gamble as a Customer Business Development Account Manager, before being promoted to Pharmaceutical Account Manager.
Besides his employment record, has also held a number of advisory roles, including Advisor to The Leona M and Harry B Helmsley Charitable Trust, Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness, LiftOff Health and My Own Med. Bergstrom holds a Bachelor degree in Marketing from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and an MBA from the Columbia Business School at Columbia University.
In his new role as Associate Director in the BCG’s healthcare practice, Bergstrom will leverage his more than 10 years’ experience in the digital healthcare industry to help develop strategies and launch businesses in digital health, with a focus on healthcare, technology, consumer and other practices.
“I will focus on, not just solving any particular client’s problems, but also on how BCG can tackle industry-wide problems and challenges that affect most of our clients,” Bergstrom explains. “We are still at a point in time where the systemic industry challenges are really the big hurdles. We’ve got phenomenal small companies with great ideas and great products, but getting them into wide distribution and business models is still a big challenge. Some of those issues are fundamental awareness of what digital health is capable of… standards and interoperability… and things near and dear to my heart, like [efficacy] …and payment and distribution models.”
Hiring Bergstrom is part of BCG’s wider strategy to improve its capabilities within the digital health segment which has been growing in recent years. And while the consulting firm will continue to focus on traditional management consulting services for digital health, the firm is also planning to develop the capabilities to help clients with product development and incubation. Bergstrom highlights that the firm will invest heavily in business leaders, technologists, entrepreneurs, venture architects, designers and others to provide clients with a means to expand on their digital strategies.
